New York Lawz: One-Stop Access to Free New York Resources

New York Lawz is brand new website, developed by a New York court librarian, that aims to bring as many free New York legal resources as possible together in one place.  It provides links to primary sources, including statutes, case law, regulations, and ethics opinions, as well as forms, journal articles, court information, free and low cost CLE listings, and current attorney job listings. As the website states: "Our mission is to provide ease of use to New York State and New York City legal information and documents at no cost to users.  Although there are many such sources of information, they are scattered across the Internet.  New York Lawz provides one stop access." Created by Gene Preudhomme, Director of the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department Law Library, New York Lawz should be a great resource for law students and for new and seasoned attorneys. The site also wants to hear your recommendations and suggestions.

JURIST

The start of your law school career (or just a new semester) is a great time to become acquainted with JURIST, the legal news and research site that continually brings you the latest legal developments from the U.S. and around the world.  Self-described as "the world's only law school-based comprehensive legal news and research service," JURIST is maintained by Professor Bernard Hibbitts and his law student editorial staff at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

For law students everywhere, JURIST means timely coverage focused on substantive impact, updates on major legal issues, and incisive commentary by experts. The Law Library's home page offers continuous breaking news feeds from JURIST, but smart students will also appreciate its numerous links to full-text court opinions, complaints, bills, and other primary source documents that are hard to find in coverage by standard news outlets.

Thomson Reuters News & Insight

Thomson Reuters, the company that brings you Westlaw and WestlawNext as well as Reuters worldwide news services, has a new web site combining Reuters legal and business news with commentary and related source documents from Westlaw. Thomson Reuters News & Insight includes national legal coverage, with specific coverage of New York, California, bankruptcy and securities law developments. The news and some Insight articles on the site are free. Law students and anyone with a Westlaw OnePass account may access the Westlaw documents featured on the site by using their Westlaw password. This is a good source to keep in mind for news and analysis on fast-changing legal issues for class and for legal practice.

JURIST

The start of a new school year is a great time to become acquainted, or reacquainted, with JURIST, the real-time legal news and research site that keeps you up to the minute with legal news from the United States and around the world. Written and maintained by faculty and students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, JURIST is self-described as "the world's only law school-based comprehensive legal news and research service."

You may have noticed that the Law Library's home page features continuous feeds from JURIST with breaking legal news. But JURIST is much more. It's a great web resource for background, law faculty analysis and commentary, primary documents, and video clips on many legal topics. Check it out.
