Women, Business and the Law 2016

How do 173 countries across the globe, including the United States, compare in terms of legal barriers to women's employment and business activity?  The latest Women, Business and the Law report by the World Bank Group provides national comparisons over a wide range of related areas, from restrictions on women in establishing credit, making contracts, and holding certain jobs, to parental leave laws and the criminalization of domestic violence. Released this month, "Women, Business and the Law 2016: Getting to Equal" is an excellent source for comparative law research in business, economic development, and women and the law. New on HeinOnline: Women and the Law

Women and the Law is HeinOnline's new library of contemporary and historical materials on the development of women's legal rights and the status of women in law and society over the past 200 years. This is a unique collection of materials encompassing books, scholarly articles, biographies, speeches, letters, legislation, government studies, constitutional amendment materials and conference presentations, with coverage from the 1790's through 2013. Major topics include suffrage, property and marriage rights, education, employment, and reproductive rights.  You'll find Women and the Law in the alphabetical list of HeinOnline libraries linked from the Law Library website. UN Secretary-General's Database on Violence Against Women

The UN Secretary General's Database on Violence Against Women contains information about violence against women and the measures taken by various countries to combat this violence. The advanced search feature allows you to search by type of measure taken, the form of violence and by country. It also has a profiles on several countries that outline that country's legal framework, policies and strategies, institutional mechanisms, services and preventative measures and statistics related to violence against women.

Women in the Profession

The ABA Commission on Women in the Profession provides some good resources for both attorneys and law students. It offers a list of upcoming events and provides links to news articles on women in the law. Its publications page is filled with many reports (some of them free, even) and is a great place to start when doing research in women in the legal profession.

Learn more about Women's History Month at the Library of Congress. This year's theme is "Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet" and it honors the contributions of women in the "going green" movement. You can read about the 2009 Honorees here.

Women's History CyberMuseum

Women's History Month is a great time to become familiar with the CyberMuseum of the National Women's History Museum (NWHM). The Museum, a nonprofit and nonpartisan institution "dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the diverse historic contributions" of American women, created the CyberMuseum as a platform for its collection of online exhibits while awaiting a permanent home in Washington, D.C., a milestone that will require Congressional legislation. The CyberExhibits here feature history and resources for key topics in women's history and rights, including voting, reform movements and pioneering women legislators.

Justice Matters

The Justice Matters web site from the National Partnership for Women and Families is a good place to go if you are interested in legal issues related to women and families. The site monitors Supreme Court cases on matters such as workplace discrimination, equal pay and health care. I like the "cases to follow" feature for a heads up on upcoming cases on the Supreme Court calendar.
