Unofficial start of Summer ???

Despite the continued need for my virtual fur, this weekend is the unofficial start of Summer.  The good news is the beaches are ready.  (According to my brethren beach watchers on the South shore, anyway).  The bad news is finding a warm sunny spot to soak in some vitamin D will take some patience.

If you are looking for a good window sill to sun, or want to get some work done before the Summer weather actually arrives, the Library will be open this weekend, but on the limited schedule as follows:

Fri. 5/23 -   8-5p
Sat. 5/24 - 10-6p
Sun. 5/25 -10-6p  (no Reference librarian available)
Mon 5/26 - CLOSED - no swipe card access

Enjoy the weekend and your Memorial Day celebrations.

How Does Your Beach Rate?

Sooner or later this summer--even if it's after the Bar exam for some of them--most humans will head to the beach.  But what kind of water are you running into?  Find out how your local or vacation beach rates by taking a look at "Testing the Waters 2013:  A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches."  This guide and report on beach water quality on the East and West coasts and around the Great Lakes is prepared annually by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a well-known environmental advocacy organization.  It includes a chart rating 200 of the nation's popular beaches, including a sampling of favorites in Nassau County and New York City, based on their water quality, monitoring frequency, and notification practices.  In addition, you can find information about the data used in the report and the most common pollution sources,  data for both rated and unrated beaches, and special coverage of the Great Lakes. Check it out before you dive in.

Summer at last!

With the "unofficial start of summer" this weekend who isn't thinking about the beach?  Here on Long Island we have some of the world's best beaches (imho, not that I am biased or anything), Sandy notwithstanding.   The boardwalks in both Long Beach  and Jones Beach Boardwalk are being rebuilt.  Long Beach's boardwalk is not ready for visitors but I have read that the boardwalk in Jones Beach is.  For details on your favorite beach, see the NY Times' Survey of the Region's Battered Beaches published last week.

Have a great long weekend!

You Survived!!!

Congratulations to the 3rd years - you have survived the Bar Exam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that you take some time to rest and recover. Enjoy some movies, sleeping late, or my favorite relaxation locale - the Long Island beaches. As a Virtual Cat I don't get to feel the sand between my toes, but many of my feline counterparts do love to sit in the sun. I have heard from at least one human beach lover that Long Island has some of the best beaches in the world. So give Jones Beach or Long Beach a try.

Whatever you do, you deserve to feel a great deal of satisfaction that you have become a member of the Bar Exam Survival club.
