Access to Justice apps

For those of us interested in increasing access to legal assistance for those with limited resources, there are now apps for that.  Free apps to find a lawyer or legal assistance such as Ask a Lawyer:Legal Help, CitizenshipWorks (for immigration assistance) and LawZam (matching lawyers and clients) are all free.  Other apps like Stop & Frisk (free),  Disastr (free web app) and My Health Care Wishes Pro ($3.99) address more specific legal concerns.

For more Access to Justice apps, see the ABA Journal's listing and descriptions.

This Day In The Law: Purchase Of Alaska

On this day in 1867, the U.S. Senate voted to ratify the Treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska. What was then known as "Seward's Folly", after the U.S. Secretary of State who advocated for the purchase, was later viewed much more favorably when gold and oil were discovered there.

Acknowledgment to Jurist.

ABA Announces Free Law Student Membership

The American Bar Association announced yesterday that "effective immediately," it would offer free membership to all students enrolled in ABA-approved law schools.  ABA membership, which previously cost students $25, offers a wealth of benefits geared to a law student's career interests and development. For example, students will have access to the ABA Job Board, with listings for clerkships and internships as well as other positions, and a resume posting service. Career advice webinars, networking events, CLE opportunities, free subscriptions, and product discounts are among the other valuable membership benefits.  Law students can apply online for ABA membership here, or by phone by calling the ABA Service Center
