The First Library of Congress
Located on Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C., the Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world. However, the original library of the United States Congress was consumed in the fire that destroyed the Capitol Building on August 24, 1814.
