This Day In The Law: Purchase Of Alaska
On this day in 1867, the
U.S. Senate voted to ratify the Treaty with Russia for the purchase of
Alaska. What was then known as "Seward's Folly", after the U.S.
Secretary of State who advocated for the purchase, was later viewed much more favorably
when gold and oil were discovered there.
