Magna Carta Celebration Continues

You've probably heard by now that this year marks the 800th anniversary of one of Anglo-American law's most treasured documents--the Magna Carta.  A special exhibit at the Library of Congress, featured in a previous post, proudly displayed one of the original copies.  Now, to accompany its ongoing celebratory exhibit, the British Library has created an outstanding digital presentation of original items on display, articles, videos, and more to enjoy online.  And closer to home, the latest issue of the New Yorker features an eye-opening article about the Magna Carta in its own times and in American legal tradition, "The Rule of History: Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, and the Hold of Time," by historian staff writer Jill Lepore.  Anyone interested in law, history, or our heritage of legal rights should check these out.

ABA Journals on Hein Online

The American Bar Association Journals is a sub collection of the Law Journal Library (Hein Online) which contains only titles published by the American Bar Association.  You can search an individual title or across the collection.  Each article is a separate PDF so this is a good source for journal source gathering.

Access to Justice apps

For those of us interested in increasing access to legal assistance for those with limited resources, there are now apps for that.  Free apps to find a lawyer or legal assistance such as Ask a Lawyer:Legal Help, CitizenshipWorks (for immigration assistance) and LawZam (matching lawyers and clients) are all free.  Other apps like Stop & Frisk (free),  Disastr (free web app) and My Health Care Wishes Pro ($3.99) address more specific legal concerns.

For more Access to Justice apps, see the ABA Journal's listing and descriptions.

This Day In The Law: Purchase Of Alaska

On this day in 1867, the U.S. Senate voted to ratify the Treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska. What was then known as "Seward's Folly", after the U.S. Secretary of State who advocated for the purchase, was later viewed much more favorably when gold and oil were discovered there.

Acknowledgment to Jurist.

It includes numerical and demographic data on offenders by crime category, statistics on guilty pleas and trials, comparisons of sentences to the guideline range, data from drug and immigration cases, and sentencing appeals information.

Best of all, there is an Interactive Sourcebook where you can create customized statistical tables and filter data by circuit, district, and date. For historical or comparative statistics, consult the Annual Reports & Sourcebooks Archives, containing all Sourcebooks back to the 1996 first edition.
